Salt Lake City, Utah – April 15, 2011 – The 40th Intermountain Concours d'Elegance (intermountainconcours.com) announced today that its 2011 event will be held on Saturday, August 27, from 10 AM until 5 PM. For the second year the event will be held in The Gardens of Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah (thanksgivingpoint.com).
Previously known as the Utah Concours, the event, now marking its 40th anniversary, is attracting a world-class field of more than 150 cars. This year's event celebrates a racing theme with two special classifications, Salt Flats Racers and three vehicles that participated in this year's World Race 2011, a New York to Beijing to Paris road rally (world-race.net).
The judging team is being assembled and directed by Paul “Doc" Sable who will serve the Intermountain Concours d'Elegance as Chief Judge. Dr. Paul Sable is a noted and respected automotive historian, author, overall car enthusiast, and a avid collector of hybrid cars of the fifties such as Hudson Italia, Nash-Healey, Facel-Vega, and Dual-Ghia among others. Dr. Sable is a co-founder of the Concours of the Eastern United States and served as its director from 1990 to 1995.
Taking advantage of the spectacular grounds offered The Gardens at Thanksgiving Point, event organizer Chris Purdum will be asking all participants to raise their hoods for a two-hour period prior to the announcement of the event's winners, dubbed “Hoods Up at High Noon.” “Traditionally, hoods remain down during a concours so each car's lines remain unspoiled, raised only during the judging,” says Purdum. “This restricts the ability of those attending the event to view the engine compartments, often the most interesting parts of these historic automobiles. So we will be asking between noon and 2 PM all participants to raise their hoods, or bonnets as our British cousins call them, so that everyone will be able to admire the designer's skill and the restorer's art.”
Other activities that will be part of the three-day Intermountain Concours d'Elegance program will include a wine and cheese reception on Thursday evening, August 25. On Friday evening, August 26, all participants will be entertained during a gala dinner and presentation in the show barn where Jeff Mahl, great grandson of 1908 Great Race winner George Schuster will share stories from his great grandfather along with his own experiences from participating in the World Race 2011. He will be making his comments on stage from the seat of the Thomas Flyer movie car, one of the cars featured in the made-for-television documentary, The Greatest Auto Race on Earth, and the evening's festivities will include a screening of the film.(thegreatestautorace.com).
The Intermountain Concours d’Elegance will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2011 on the grounds of the prestigious Gardens at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah. The Intermountain Concours d' Elegance is a volunteer-run, 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization with proceeds supporting the Museum of Natural Curiosity – a place where children can explore their world through good, old-fashioned play in a rich educational environment. The Intermountain Concours d’Elegance board of directors aspires to create a premier automotive event for the Intermountain region among the splendor of the natural beauty of Utah. The event will be held less than one hour south of Salt Lake International Airport, a major transportation hub, making it easy to participate in and attend this premiere event.
