Thanks to Gordon Lightfoot, one of my favorites, we all know about the legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald . We all know how ferocious Lake Superior can be.
Lake Michigan, also know as Michigami a Ojibwe word meaning Big Lake, has it own tragic stories Here's one about the SS Senator, its crew and the cars.
Car Story
Forty six years before the of the Edmund FitzGerald was lost, Lake Michigan grabbed the SS Senator and sent her to the bottom. Her cargo consisted of 268 Nash Automobiles headed to Detroit. This underwater car museum has the largest collection of one year and make on land and/or under water.
It happened the last week of October 1929 the great depression had just begun. Nine days after Black Thursday, the SS Senator left port from Kenosha heading to Detroit. On board were 268 Nash Automotives with a value of $251,000 (todays value 4.7M).
On that foggy night, Captain Kinch, Captain of the Senator, rushing to meet a deadline headed to Detroit. The SS Marquette, a bulk carrier, with 7,000lbs of iron ore, running at full speed, collided with SS Senator in the darkness of the fog. The Senator sank and loss seven crew members including Captain Kinch.
The 268 Nash Automobiles have since lied 430 ft deep in icy waters. If you wish to visit that car museum you should probably get some scuba driving equipment.
